Man gets 10 years for cable theft

He stole R1 200 worth of copper cable belonging to the City of Ekurhuleni.

Neo Letole (36) was arrested on August 11, 2023, for cable theft but released with a warning. He appeared in court that same day for the first time.

He was charged with one count of tampering with essential infrastructure by digging up and removing 60cm of 4-core copper cables belonging to the City of Ekurhuleni and one count of theft of the cable, which was valued at R1 200.

The theft occurred on August 9, 2023, but Letole pleaded not guilty to both counts on November 5, 2024. On March 10 of this year, however, he was found guilty on both counts and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for each.

It was ordered that the sentences run concurrently, landing Letole in prison for 10 years. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
